Moving to the Netherlands: Essential Tips for Expats to Settle and Thrive

Relocating to the Netherlands
Relocating to the Netherlands

Relocating to the Netherlands really is an adventure—there’s so much to discover, so many new opportunities, and yes, the occasional challenge. I’ve taken this leap several times myself. I was born in Mexico and have called the United States, Spain, and now the Netherlands home. So I get it: making a new country feel like home isn’t always straightforward, but it’s always filled with unforgettable experiences.

When you move with your partner and kids, the journey gets even more emotional—and sometimes a little complicated. As a mother, I’ve learned how important it is to help your family settle in, especially when it comes to new schools and adapting to a different culture. It’s not just about their happiness; it brings you peace of mind, too.

Honestly, that’s one of the big reasons I started Global Leap Group—I love helping global leapers like you to settle in smoothly and confidently. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my clients get comfortable and truly start enjoying life in their new home. So, I’d like to share a few heartfelt tips and trusted resources that helped my family—and can help yours—find your place in Dutch life.

1. Learn Basic Dutch — A Gesture That Opens Hearts

When my family first arrived in the Netherlands, we were fortunate that most people spoke excellent English and readily adapted to help us feel comfortable. Yet, I quickly realized that making an effort to learn basic Dutch made a meaningful difference. It showed respect for my new community and opened doors to deeper connections—even if I wasn’t fluent yet.

Learning essential Dutch phrases helped us feel part of the community and enriched our everyday interactions. For children, it made school integration easier and less intimidating.

2. Embrace Biking—Join a National Tradition

It took me a few months to find the courage to bike in the Netherlands. At first, I was genuinely terrified. To build confidence, I started cycling during off-peak hours in quieter areas and observed how locals communicated and navigated the streets. Gradually, biking became my preferred way to get around. Owning a bike here means embracing a cherished Dutch tradition—and it’s truly a lot of fun!

3. Support Your Spouse or Partner—Building Community and Purpose

Relocating often means one partner moves for work while the other may not have a job initially. Supporting your spouse or partner during this transition is vital. They might feel isolated without a familiar routine, so helping them find social networks, hobbies, or volunteering opportunities is key to fostering belonging.

Encourage open conversations about their feelings and explore local expat and community groups tailored for partners. This support strengthens your family’s overall integration and happiness.

4. Navigate School Transitions with Care

For families relocating with children, choosing the right school and supporting their cultural adaptation is crucial. From personal experience, early conversations about the move, involvement with teachers, and encouraging participation in language and social activities are essential. Helping children build friendships through clubs or sports speeds up their integration.

5. Join Support Networks and Engage Locally

Building a social network is one of the most effective ways to settle in quickly. Local expat groups, cultural centers, and municipal programs offer events and activities that create connection points. Getting involved delivers emotional support and practical insights into Dutch culture.

Relocating internationally is much more than logistics—it’s a family journey of adaptation, growth, and new beginnings. With the right mindset, support, and trusted resources, you can transform your move to the Netherlands into a positive and enriching experience for you and your loved ones.
